Who do you say He is?

VERSE

MATTHEW 16:13-16 When Jesus came to the region of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, “Who do people say the Son of Man is?”

14 They replied, “Some say John the Baptist; others say Elijah; and still others, Jeremiah or one of the prophets.”

15 “But what about you?” he asked. “Who do you say I am?”

16 Simon Peter answered, “You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God.”

INTRO / DISCUSSION

God is good, and we can all say what God has done for us, we can share testimonies about the situations, the relationships, the places God has taken us away from. A lot of people have different perspectives on what God does, but also who God is.

Who is He to you? If God provides, is He your provider? If Jesus has saved you from circumstances, is He your savior?

Who do you say He is?

And why is this so important?

MATTHEW 16:17-18 Jesus came back, “God bless you, Simon, son of Jonah! You didn’t get that answer out of books or from teachers. My Father in heaven, God himself, let you in on this secret of who I really am. And now I’m going to tell you who you are, really are. You are Peter, a rock. This is the rock on which I will put together my church, a church so expansive with energy that not even the gates of hell will be able to keep it out.

Jesus gives, always. He loves Peter’s response, it doesn’t focus on Jesus being a provider, he already provides. It doesn’t focus on him being a lion for the tribe of Judah, it simply focuses on who He is. “The Messiah, the Son of God.“ Jesus not only loves what we call him, he also wants to change what people call us. Who do people say that YOU are?

The short answer? It doesn’t matter. What matters is what God says about you, and he has a lot of good things to say about you.

Who are you? According to the word of God, you’re a rock, you are saved, you are justified, you are redeemed, you are accepted, you are called, you are a saint, you are a temple, you are triumphant, you are victorious, you are a friend, we can go on and on.

The proof is in the word, Jesus loves you, and He has a lot of great things to say about you.
