Save Us, We Are Perishing

TEACHING

23 And when he got into the boat, his disciples followed him. 24 And behold, there arose a great storm on the sea, so that the boat was being swamped by the waves; but he was asleep. 25 And they went and woke him, saying, “Save us, Lord; we are perishing.” 26 And he said to them, “Why are you afraid, O you of little faith?” Then he rose and rebuked the winds and the sea, and there was a great calm. 27 And the men marveled, saying, “What sort of man is this, that even winds and sea obey him?”

Matthew 8:23-27 ESV

Do you think Jesus was asleep?

And notice that before he rebuked the winds, he reprimanded his disciples.

He was probably sitting up on his bed, putting on his Crocs and yelling at these guys.

Why is Jesus kinda harsh? What was he expecting?

  1. Jesus is extremely direct.

He’s not going to waste time. His ministry here on Earth only lasted about three years. He didn’t waste a second. He needed them to know that it wasn’t that serious.

How do we get when we lose control?

Some of us get afraid, we cry, we shake. Some of us shut down, others leave to avoid pain.

The disciples panicked.

They were completely afraid, so afraid that they said,

Save us, Lord; we are perishing.

Were they really perishing?? Of course not!

Are you really perishing when your plane enters turbulence? Are you perishing when your texting and driving and almost hit a tree? Are you perishing when you hide your sin and one day it catches up to you?

OF COURSE NOT!

But we all need the same thing in moments like that. We need Jesus to save us.

And you know what? He does.

  • The plane lands.

  • You miss the tree.

  • Your sin is forgiven.

What was Jesus expecting? He was expecting the disciples AND US to know that He’s in control.
