Traditions (Nov. 8-12) - Mission Month
MISSION
This month is mission month, and we want to challenge you to use your group to make an impact in your community. To evangelize, to extend your hands, to reach out and embrace those who are hurting.
TEACHING
6 Therefore, as you received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk in him, 7 rooted and built up in him and established in the faith, just as you were taught, abounding in thanksgiving.
8 See to it that no one takes you captive by philosophy and empty deceit, according to human tradition, according to the elemental spirits of the world, and not according to Christ.
Colossians 2:6-8 ESV
There are lots of things that affect us, not just the gospel. Sometimes it’s routine, or philosophy, ideas we’ve been holding onto for years, or even traditions. Things our family put in our heads that we still do, no matter what.
For example, did your family ever tell you:
Don’t turn on the light in the car at nighttime.
Don’t eat and immediately jump into pool.
It’s kinda funny but they stay with you, I’ll eat at a bbq and wait before jumping into the pool. This is what Paul is referring to in regards to traditions, he’s saying be aware of this and DO NOT be taken captive by any of them.
Especially if they get in the way of your relationship with God.
6 Therefore, as you received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk in him, 7 rooted and built up in him and established in the faith, just as you were taught, abounding in thanksgiving.
Each of us that have Jesus living in our heart, have to be:
Rooted
Built Up
Established
Jesus wants us to lay a foundation: established in the faith, just as you were taught, abounding in thanksgiving.
Discussion:
What are some traditions you saw growing up? And do you still keep some?
How are you establishing yourself in the Lord?
