Be Someone that Builds

VERSE

By the grace God has given me, I laid a foundation as a wise builder, and someone else is building on it. But each one should build with care. For no one can lay any foundation other than the one already laid, which is Jesus Christ. If anyone builds on this foundation using gold, silver, costly stones, wood, hay or straw, their work will be shown for what it is, because the Day will bring it to light. It will be revealed with fire, and the fire will test the quality of each person’s work.

1 Corinthians 3:10-13

INTRO / DISCUSSION

I wanted to touch on this in Friday service, but didn’t get a chance to. Paul describes building on top of the foundation of Jesus - right, we get it. But then he goes on to describe a ton of different materials. This really spoke to me, one, because I’m constantly hearing nursery rhymes about three little pigs building houses, and two, our generation has no excuse. It’s not about using the best resources, it’s about using anything we can get our hands on. - Rico

Our generation doesn’t really believe in long-term. These days we’re saving less, investing somewhat, but we’re buying every single day. We take what we’re given and we give it right back. What Paul is describing is working in a way that lasts, so that at the end of your journey, someone can pick up where you left off.

I laid a foundation as a wise builder, and someone else is building on it.

What I love about these examples, is that Paul doesn’t tell us what to build on, he doesn’t tell us how, he doesn’t tell us to buy Amazon stock when it’s low and sell when it’s high.

He’s simply saying, build.

Gold, silver, expensive stones, wood, hay, straw. Your work will be shown for what it is.

Here are some perspectives I took away from this:

  1. Don’t waste time. Life is precious and short, use your time wisely.

  2. Build quietly. Paul’s attitude about building isn’t braggy, it’s instructional.

  3. Use what you have. Don’t spend a lifetime looking for the perfect building materials, they don’t exist.

Keep in mind, a test is coming. It can be physical, spiritual, maybe both. But at some point, what you are building will be tested. Whether it’s a life, a relationship, a house, a marriage, or a friendship. The fire is coming, and when it does the quality will prove if it survives.

Q & A

What are you building?

Who are you building for?

Is there something you want and are working towards? Do you need help?
